So says Antonio:

Sun Ra music: Land of the day star, Mystery of two, Velvet

May 22, 1964, Sun Ra was in Sicily. That day, in the village of Santa Croce Camerina, he met my grandfather.

My grandfather had a pasta factory: kneading, gave the form, dry pasta for all the inhabitants of the village. The pasta was three qualities: black (whole wheat ), dirty ( mixed ), white.

Sun Ra was in town to relax, looking for quiet golden beaches for the day of his fortieth birthday.

He went into the lab to ask questions. He was wearing a funny cap.
It was 2.30 pm, the hour of the siesta. My grandfather was playing the bombardino trombone, one of his arrangements of the classic Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller, but whit 5/4 time, playing around like: pam – pa pa pam …

They became friends, they recorded a disc, now lost.

My grandfather made him listen the traditional Sicilian music, modal music and horizontal. The Arabic scales, like of Egypt scales. The marranzano, a type of Jew’s Harp, similar to that of India but also to the Cowboys.

Walks, long walks in the Randello woods to pick asparagus.
Suddenly, the aliens from Saturn, kidnapped them …”

And then….

Beppe Grifeo plays his arrangements of Sun Ra songs.
