The Wirebender presents : Marc Matthews – That six o’clock feeling

Greetings from the wire bender here at radio on Berlin October 2026

Guyanese writer Marc Matthews, actor, musician, broadcaster and producer. https://www.spokenwordarchive. org.uk/content/artist/marc- matthews

During Guyana’s turbulent and violent ”independence In the 1960s Marc moved to London  where he still resides  and  where he became  part of  the  “UK Black Power movement

He worked closely in the Caribbean Artists Movement (CAM) with Kamau Brathwaite and John La Rose,  Marc  was  one of the younger poets there with Linton Kwesi Johnson in 1987 he won the Guyana Prize for his debut poetry collection.  Marc Matthews’s pioneering role as a nation language performance poet has  probably not been properly recognised, his roots and material were always more Guyanese than Black British.?

Similarly, because of its nature as live theatre rather than as published scripts, his important work, first with fellow Guyanese Ken Corsbie in “Dem Two” then in All Ah We, which added John Agard and Henry Muttoo, has largely vanished from the record, if not the memory of those who witnessed them.

Only Matthews’s record Marc-Up (1987) survives as a record of those days.our show features recordings from his performances captured on Marc Up.

Mathews  is also known for his work under the pseudonym “Tramping Man,” a musical collaboration with Jean Phillippe Altier, Florian Brand and Adam Hoyle as Burn brothers   where he and I first buck up
